Stephanie

University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice

I’ve taken a variety of Czech courses – traditional evening classes at university, one-on-one conversational lessons online, women-only group lessons... My biggest piece of advice is to find a method that works for you, and to remind yourself that Rome Prague wasn’t built in a day. I’ve gone from practicing “the kráva eats the tráva” (the cow eats the grass) to preparing for the Czech citizenship exam, and you can too!

Czechia offers great opportuniries for students to gain real work experiences, especially in international companies. Being here made it much easier to connect with employers and take the first real step into my career.

As someone who moved to Czechia from Myanmar on my own, my biggest advice is to prepare the essentials early: accommodation, insurance, and important documents. At the same time, prepare yourself mentally for unfamiliar situations and the challenges of adapting to a new country. The first few weeks can feel overwhelming, but with patience, an open mind, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone, it gradually becomes easier and more rewarding.

Barry Wan

Janáček Academy of Performing Arts

I came to Czechia from Hong Kong in 2010, inspired by the film Kolya and its poetic depiction of Prague. I started my journey at the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno, followed by studies at HAMU in Prague, and FUD UJEP in Usti nad Labem. I am currently completing my second PhD at the University of West Bohemia. Czech higher education impressed me with its respect for independent artistic voices and the freedom to experiment across disciplines. The mentorship, focused training, and openness to technology-driven and interdisciplinary work allowed me to integrate my Hong Kongese heritage with European musical traditions. Today, as a lecturer and composer, I continue to perform internationally while contributing to Czech cultural life. Czechia has become my home, offering both artistic freedom and a supportive community, and I encourage future students to come with curiosity, patience, and openness to fully embrace the opportunities here.

The visa process might look overwhelming at first, but if you stay organized and carefully read all the requirements on your country's official Czechia embassy website, you'll quickly become familiar with the documents you need and can start gathering them right away. My biggest piece of advice is to start the process with enough time in advance. Time management and organization are the key!
